This Power Conditioning and Distribution Unit is based on a flexible modular concept developed in the frame of Astrobus Platform and designed to fulfil different mission requirements with a low non-recurring effort.
For applications in GEO, LEO and Interplanetary Orbits, the PCDU consist of two main elements. The Power Conditioning part (PCU) of the PCDU covers all tasks to control the power flow in the unit from the different sources and performs the communication with the On-Board Computer. The output power for the payload, the platform avionics, the heaters and the deployment devices is provided via the Power Distribution part (PDU) of the PCDU on command from the on board Computer.
The PCDU is based on an unregulated bus architecture, where the bus voltage follows the battery voltage, controlled by means of a one failure tolerant Main Error Amplifier. The unit is fully autonomous for any spacecraft operational mode including battery charge management.
It is already qualified to power requirements ranging between 1kW and 4.5kW. The modular design of the PCDU uses concepts and qualified modules with significant space heritage and is compliant with the latest ESA ECSS standards.
